Right we have done Northern Europe for now and are heading towards the Eastern bloc. We are staying at Sir Tobys in Holesovice Prague. How have we been travelling? We are using Eurail Global pass - first class (we have our own private seats) so we can hop on and off trains as we please except where you have to reserve but we have not had to do that yet. Travel times have averaged around 4 hours with some longer distances of 8 hours from Copenhagen to Berlin. I book our accommodation a day in advance once we've decided where we are going using http://www.hostelbookers.com/ and it has been seamless. I look for a 'Quad' or 4 person dorm with private bathroom. I look at the reviews of each place before booking. Good WiFi is important (I turn Mobile data off and use wifi only) especially when you need to book your next accommodation or suss out our next destination. Also location to Main train stations and supermarkets. I budget around $100NZD per night for accommodation for 4 people (if you are single you can comfortably do it for $20-25 per night) and $70NZD (45 euros) per day for food, so shopping at supermarkets for food (& alcohol) is important to keep costs down (for example 8 croissants are 0.39 euros in a supermarket compared to 1.39 euros for one at a bakerij) and leave money for important things like sightseeing, sometimes we treat ourselves to a restaurant. Amsterdam and Copenhagen so far has been the most expensive places to visit. Budget has worked well, we have stayed at very nice, flash hostels and are eating well. Touring Europe in Spring on the shoulder of tourist season is good as prices are cheaper and there are no queues (exception Anne Frank Huis where we queued for 2 hours in the stormy weather - will never do that again). Temperatures have ranged from -3C-11C we had a little bit of snow in Copenhagen for about 5 minutes. The heating has been great in the hostels in fact I turn it off and open windows as it is too hot.
We arrived in Czech Republic - Prague (Praha). We are staying at Sir Tobys in Holesovice which is outside of the city and one stop before the main station. We got off at Holesovice but the train guard insisted we get back on! I think she thought we as tourists would not be staying in Hole. Anyway long story short - it was a mission to get back to Holesovice from the city. It snowed while we walked from Holesovice metro station it was grey and miserable and I was thinking 'wtf'! I am not enjoying this. We finally got to our hostel and it was like a warm blanket was wrapped around us - the hostel is fantastic off the tourist trail, authentic CZ, cozy and homey.
View from our window.
Our room, very vintage and retro. Roomy and warm.
Enjoying the basement bar downstairs
